What aspects should I consider before embarking on my trip to the world´s southernmost region?

It is advisable to prepare a "personal medicine bag" for the trip, including at least one first aid kit (disinfectant, bandages, patches, scissors, cotton, thermometer, etc.), an insect repellant, sunscreen, anti-itch creams for insect bites, antipyretics (acetaminophen), antidiarrheals, intestinal antibiotics and common medicines.

During the trip, we advise you to avoid eating vegetables and seafood, ice drink liquids and beverages that are not sealed. A good way to avoid infection is to wash hands properly before eating and especially after using the toilet. We also suggest avoiding contact with animals. If you regularly take certain medications (eg, hypertension, epilepsy, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, etc) we suggest informing your physician before your trip. Though it is important not to interrupt the usual treatments, we must take into account possible contraindications or incompatibility with some prevention measures to avoid diseases like malaria, and even vaccines related to the trip.

What issues should I considerat the end of my trip?

We recommend you tell your doctor if any skin diseases, venereal diseases, fever, diarrhea, or sudden weight loss, symptoms that could be related to your journey.

What considerations should I take with insects during my trip?

It is desirable to avoid using deodorants or perfumes that may attract insects. It is not advisable to walk barefoot or with sandals, always use footwear. Since insects are the most common form of infection while traveling, it is important to avoid bites by using repellents and other appropriate devices (nets, long sleeve shirt, high socks, etc). In case of insect bites, we recommend you to notify your local guide and disinfect the affected area with particular care.

How I can reduce the chance of getting sick while traveling?

Fecal-oral transmission diseases, such as traveler's diarrhea, hepatitis A and E, typhoid, and cholera are common diseases among travelers. The cause is ingestion of food or drink contaminated by infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, parasites) and usually manifest in the digestive symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea).

The best prevention is to pay attention to what you eat and follow these basic rules:

  • Eat foods that contain fish, meat, or shellfish only if they are thoroughly cooked and still warm.
  • Avoid foods that contain eggs (mayonnaise, sauces).
  • Do not eat unwrapped ice cream.
  • Avoid eating raw vegetables and fruit that can not be peeled.
  • Take only sealed bottled water or boil water for at least 3 minutes.
  • Absolutely avoid ice in drinks.
  • Avoid consumption of milk and dairy products if you are not sure of its origin.
  • Use bottled water for brushing teeth and taking medications.

What is the Hanta virus and how can I prevent its spread?

It is important to consider this seasonal disease. It occurs mainly in spring and summer, due to human encroachment on the habitat of "mouse-long-tailed (O. longicaudatus). This disease is transmitted by being bitten by rodents, by eating infected food or water or breathe air contaminated by saliva, urine or droppings of rodents. To prevent the spread of this disease, we suggest you consider:

  • Avoid going into bushes and shrubs with fruit.
  • When accessing forests or areas with dense vegetation, walk throug enabled trails or traces.
  • When collecting wild fruits and seeds (rosehips, hazelnuts, pine nuts, berries, etc..), do not smell them and before eating, wash your hands and fruits thoroughly .
  • Make sure to camp in sites authorized by the corresponding Health Service.
