Bolivian altiplano’s “sky mirrors”, salares & lagunas

(4 Days / 3 Nights)

From Chile we will cross the imposing Andean Cordillera to reach the wonderful Bolivian Altiplano. You will be surprised by the surreal landscapes, blue skies, pristine salt lakes and lagoons full of pink flamingos, all framed by majestic volcanoes and by the ancient culture of its people.

We have thought this experience as an ideal example of what can be done in the region. However, our idea is to adapt each proposal to the  traveler’s specific needs. We are, therefore, willing to make all the necessary modifications and re quote it according to your interests.

TRAVEL LOG

Day 1: San Pedro de Atacama Laguna Verde Laguna Colorada Villamar

Leaving San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, in the early morning heading for the Bolivian border crossing of Cajon at 4500 m.a.s.l. The road will lead us into the Andean National Wildlife Reserve Eduardo Abaroa. We will observe there the beautiful Lagunas Blanca and Verde at the foot of the volcano Licancabur (5.916m) sacred peak for local people.

Laguna Blanca will amaze you with its rich local fauna and colourful flamingos. Our journey will take us to the Salar de Chalviri and geothermal field "Morning Sun" with its fumaroles and hot mud pools at 4,870 m.a.s.l. When you think you have seen everything, the land becoming a mirror on the water, Laguna Colorada will impress you with its unexpected beauty off its pink water, borax islands and hundreds of flamingos flying in the sky. The evening awaits us in the village of Hotel Tayka del desierto (Ojo de Perdiz) or Hostal Piedritas (Villamar where you will spend the night.

Day 2: Villamar Uyuni

Today you will travel through the Bolivian Altiplano. You will reach San Cristobal and its silver mine (now the largest in Bolivia), admire Alota, a shepherd’s village of ancient culture and customs. We will penetrate into the Valle de las Rocas where you will be able to see the interesting geological formations, then off to Uyuni where you can wander around its streets and markets. Overnight at hotel.

Day 3: Uyuni Salar de Uyuni Uyuni

The day will be dedicated to the delights that the Salar de Uyuni (Uyuni Salt Flat) holds for you. We will visit Colchani, a small town where the miners who process the salt live, then up to Incahuasi island. After a walk through the salt lake and the island, we will return to Uyuni to spend the night in our hotel.

Day 4: Uyuni Ollague Calama

Early in the morning you say good bye to Uyuni to return to Chile’s border on a journey through the Bolivian Altiplano that will takes you to the Salar de Chiguana, with its imposing peaks that are volcanoes. Crossings the border from Bolivia to Chile, you will be taken in by the beauty of the Ascotan and Carcote salt lakes. After descending from the desert, our final destination will be the airport of Calama.
